Repatriation Exhibition

This exhibition presents cultural objects returned to Botswana and the Gammangwato community and explores their journey home after 130years.
It reflects on the meaning of restitution and repatriation, the responsibilities involved in caring for cultural heritage, and the importance of reconnecting communities with objects linked to their history and identity.
Visitors are invited to consider questions of ownership, memory, cultural stewardship and the continuing relationship between museums and the communities whose heritage they preserve.

Culture Room

The Culture Room introduces visitors to different aspects of cultural and community life.
Through traditional objects and interpretive displays, the exhibition explores customs, social organisation, craftsmanship, identity and the ways knowledge has been passed from one generation to another.
It celebrates both the continuity of local traditions and the ways cultural life has changed over time.

Bessie Head Exhibition

This gallery celebrates the life, work and literary legacy of Bessie Head, one of Africa’s most internationally recognised writers.
The exhibition explores her life in Serowe, the community and experiences that influenced her writing, and her contribution to Botswana’s literary and intellectual history.
Visitors can discover the story behind the writer, her connection to Serowe and the enduring relevance of her work.

The Story of Serowe

Walk through the history of Serowe along a chronological passage tracing the village’s development from its early settlement to the twenty-first century.
The exhibition highlights significant moments in Serowe’s social, political and economic transformation, revealing how leadership, migration, faith, education, trade and community life contributed to the growth of one of Botswana’s most historically significant villages.
