About the Khama III Memorial Museum
Established in 1985 in Serowe, Botswana, the Khama III Memorial Museum preserves and shares the history, culture and identity of the Bangwato people and the wider Gammangwato region.
The museum is housed in one of Serowe’s earliest trading houses, a historic building that is more than 125 years old. The building is itself an important part of the region’s heritage, offering visitors an opportunity to experience history within a space that has witnessed generations of change.
The museum brings together cultural objects, archival records, photographs and literary collections that tell the story of leadership, community life, political change and creativity from the nineteenth century to the present day.
Our mission
Our mission is to preserve, document and interpret the historical and cultural heritage of Gammangwato and Serowe People.We achieve this through carefully curated exhibitions, responsible archival stewardship, research support, educational programmes, community engagement and the preservation of cultural objects and historical records.The museum is committed to ensuring that this heritage remains accessible, meaningful and protected for present and future generations.
What We Preserve
- Historical Archives
The museum safeguards correspondence, leadership records, administrative documents and other primary sources that provide valuable insight into the political and social history of the region - .Cultural and Ethnographic Collections :
Our collections include objects and artefacts connected to Gammangwato traditions, daily life, leadership, ceremony, craftsmanship and community identity. - Photographic Collections:
Historical photographs document people, places, ceremonies, institutions and important moments in the development of the Gammangwato region. - Literary heritage:
The museum preserves materials connected to the life and work of internationally recognised writer Bessie Head, whose writing and intellectual legacy remain an important part of Serowe’s cultural history.
Stories of Leadership and Change
The museum’s collections offer important perspectives on leadership, governance, diplomacy, social transformation and community resilience.
Particular attention is given to the legacies of Khama III, Sekgoma II and Tshekedi Khama, whose leadership influenced the political and social development of Gammangwato during periods of colonial engagement and national transition.
Their stories are presented alongside the experiences and contributions of the communities they led, creating a broader and more inclusive understanding of the region’s history.
