About the Khama III Memorial Museum
Established in 1985 in Serowe, Botswana, the Khama III Memorial Museum is an ethnographic and historical institution dedicated to preserving, documenting, and interpreting the cultural and political heritage of the Bangwato people and the wider Serowe community.
Our mission
To preserve, document, and interpret the historical and cultural heritage of Serowe and the Bangwato people through exhibitions, archival stewardship, research support, and community engagement.
The Museum serves as a centre for education, scholarship, and responsible heritage preservation for present and future generations.
What We Preserve
- Archival collections: historical correspondence, leadership records, and primary documents.
- Ethnographic materials: objects and cultural artefacts reflecting Bangwato traditions.
- Photographic records: visual documentation of people, places, and historical events.
- Literary heritage: materials connected to Bessie Head and intellectual history in Serowe.
Historical context
The Museum’s collections document leadership, governance, diplomacy, social transformation, and literary contribution from the nineteenth century to the present day. Particular attention is given to the legacies of Khama III, Sekgoma II, and Tshekedi Khama, whose leadership shaped regional political development during periods of colonial engagement and transition.
Through exhibitions and archives, the Museum interprets these histories within broader national and regional narratives, contributing to Botswana’s heritage infrastructure and public historical understanding.
Research & Digital Access
The Museum maintains structured archival collections available for approved research access. Researchers may request appointments in accordance with institutional policy.
As part of the Museum’s Digital Heritage Programme, selected materials are being digitised to support long-term preservation and controlled digital access for scholars and the public.
